Frequently Asked Questions

Finding a therapist and understanding what is being offered can feel confusing and overwhelming. We have put together a list of frequently asked questions that may be beneficial.

  • I (Dr Joanna King at Talking Trauma) am a Counselling Psychologist which means I have training at a doctoral level. My training and experience covers using different therapeutic modalities with different client groups. As a Counselling Psychologist I am registered and regulated by the Health Care and Professionals Council (HCPC). The title Counselling Psychologist is a protected title in the UK and means that you must meet certain criteria such as holding a doctorate and meeting certain ethical standards in order to use this title.

Psychologists are required to stay up to date with research and new ways of treating mental health difficulties. Psychologists registered with the HCPC are also trained to offer more than one type of therapy (which is different to other types of therapists who often only offer one type)

I work integratively drawing on many different therapeutic modalities including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy and Narrative approaches.

As a Counselling Psychologist I can effectively tailor treatment to your individual needs.

  • Therapy can help a wide range of difficulties. Therapy allows a person to safely explore their experiences in a confidential and non-judgemental space. Some people come to therapy to work on something specific, such as a recent traumatic experience. For others it may be that they are struggling with a certain part of their life, for example relationships or work issues. Some people may have specific symptoms that are causing them distress and they want coping skills to manage these.

If you think that you may benefit from sessions and you want to know more about therapy then please book an initial consultation to discuss your needs.

  • Online and High Wycombe (in person) - £130.

We also accept insurance referrals from Aviva and WPA.

  • Therapy is a confidential and safe space. Anything you share with us is confidential. The only time that we would consider breaking confidentiality would be if there was a risk to yourself or someone else. During your initial assessment the confidentiality policy will be explained in further detail.

  • The recommended length of time for therapy is individual dependent. Once we have completed a thorough assessment, we will discuss your goals for treatment. Based on your assessment an individual therapy plan and estimated number of therapy sessions will be discussed with you.

Therapy can be short term and time limited or long term. Some issues may be resolved in as little as 6 sessions. However, some people are looking for longer term treatment. Therefore it is important to discuss this in your assessment.

  • Once you have attended an initial consultation, we will organise a psychology assessment. An assessment takes 1-2 sessions where we will talk about your current difficulties, life experiences and goals for treatment. Following assessment we will agree a therapeutic plan for sessions. Sometimes I may recommend an alternative service that would be better suited to your specific needs. In that case I would write you an assessment report outlining recommendations.

  • Our High Wycombe space is a bright and comfortable therapy room nestled in a peaceful private garden in the Village of Penn, High Wycombe–a calm rural area with ample on site parking.

Alternatively, we offer online therapy so you can access our services where it’s most convenient for you. We can discuss which would be most beneficial for you in the initial consultation.
